MODERN POLITICAL SYSTEM

After the Matabele War of 1893 and the Rebellion of 1896 the regiments and provinces ceased to exist as recognized political units, the regimental towns were broken up and their inhabitants dispersed. But some link with the old organization was maintained because the new administration tried to rule as far as possible through the traditional subordinate authorities, and most of these traditional authorities were, in fact, either regimental chiefs, or belonged to the regimental and provincial organization in some capacity. Today there is no distinct central authority for Ndebeleland as such. The kingship is no longer recognized, and although the Native Affairs Department Province (Administrative Circle) of Bulawayo2 covers much of the country which formed the core of the old Ndebele kingdom, it excludes many areas where there is considerable Ndebele settlement and includes areas inhabited by people belonging to other tribes.
